Skiing in the Alps

We just returned from a few days of skiing in the Swiss Alps. One of our favorite things about living in Europe is there are so many fun things close by, and it’s easy to drive to another country for just a few days.

We visited the Jungfrau region of the Alps and stayed in Murren, one of several tiny towns nestled in the mountains. Murren is a car-free town, accessible by a series of small trains, lifts, and gondolas. The view was always beautiful, despite clouds and some fog. We enjoyed riding the trains to ski runs in other towns. Josh has become a very good skier in the last few years, and he tackled the highest peak (Schilthorn, 2970 meters) as well as the “Inferno Run,” a 15-km ski pass that is used for racing. I’m not a good skier at all, but during this trip I progressed enough to manage the easiest “real” ski runs. I loved skiing on paths among the spruce trees and down small hills. Josh had to help me up after many falls, and he never took my photo while I was sprawled in the snow. I’m fortunate to have such a patient husband.
Switzerland is known for Swiss cheese, of course, and a local delicacy is cheese fondue served with chunks of bread. On the way home, we stopped in Strasbourg, France to see its canals and quaint streets.
I’m so lucky to have learned to ski in the Pyrenes and the Alps. Perhaps now I could handle the ski hill in Boone, Iowa.
