After leaving Segovia, we spent a couple days in Madrid. Madrid is the capital of Spain and the largest city.
We toured the Royal Palace, where the Spanish king hangs out.

And we enjoyed window-shopping on the busy Madrid streets. We never quite got used to the Spanish schedule. Mornings were quiet, and most stores didn’t open until 10 or 11. Then they closed for the midday siesta from 2 to 4, when people ate lunch. Restaurants didn’t serve supper until late in the evening.
Spaniards eat a LOT of ham, and we found several stores that had rows and rows of hams hanging up for sale.

The geographical center of Spain is in Madrid.

I didn’t feel well our second morning in Madrid (Christmas Eve), so Josh had to explore on his own. He found a restaurant that made him homesick.

Then it was time to hit the road again! We set off in the afternoon for Toledo, only an hour outside Madrid. Josh had to explore alone again, but he took lots of pictures for me. There was a lovely old church, and lots of historic architecture.

I emerged from the hotel to join Josh on a scenic drive overlooking the town. The architecture was quite beautiful as the sun set.

Then we went back to our hotel to rest up for the next part of our adventure…
